The Mechanical Music Extravaganza is proud to announce that Archeophone Records of Champaign, Illinois attended Sunday’s show where they introduced their newest CD compilation, Waxing the Gospel: Mass Evangelism and the Phonograph, 1890 to 1900. Waxing the Gospel is a landmark collection of 102 tracks on three CDs in a 408-page beautifully illustrated hardbound book. Notable highlights include the only known recording by Fanny Crosby; the earliest recording of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” made in 1894 by the African-American singing group the Standard Quartette; and a cache of cylinders chronicling the 1897 Methodist camp meeting at Ocean Grove, New Jersey. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Be sure to check out the additional information below and purchase your copy at any of the usual outlets, including archeophone.com.
